The Schonstedt 1205CXB is a Metallic Cable Analyzer TDR for pinpointing copper cable faults – quickly, easily, and accurately. The 1205CXB Cable Analyzer is a Time Domain Reflectometer that fires a quick pulse of energy down a cable. A portion of the pulse energy is reflected back from cable imperfections. These imperfections can be discontinuities (eg, cable joints, terminations, changes in cable type, or the far end of the cable under test) or faults (typically short circuits, open circuits, high resistance joints, or water ingress).
The transmitted pulse and reflected pulse(s) are shown on the Schonstedt 1205CXB display. The time taken by the pulse to travel to the imperfection and back is a measure of the distance to the fault. This distinctive trace on the display allows a lineman or electrician to identify and zero in on the distance to a fault safely. The type of imperfection can be assessed by analyzing the displayed waveform.
The properties of a cable, mainly the insulation between the two conductors, greatly affects the velocity of the pulses traveling along the cable. This velocity is known as the Velocity of Propagation (VOP) or Velocity Factor (PVF). The VOP is a specification of the speed at which a signal travels through the cable. Different cables have different VOPs. Knowing the VOP of a cable is an important factor when using a TDR for fault finding.
Requiring low amounts of energy, TDRs are a safe tool for operators in a variety of applications, such as difficult-to-reach locations, telephone and CATV applications, and broadcast vehicles that have hundreds of various cables on-hand at any given point.
The Schonstedt 1205CXB can be used in construction, maintenance, fault finding, measuring cable length, and restoration of a cabling system, along with locating: opens and shorts, illegal taps, splitters, and loose or rusty connectors. In addition, the Schonstedt 1205CXB copper cable analyzer can be used to evaluate a variety of different cable types: coax, twisted pair, aerial, low voltage power, and in applications where a change, such as a water leak, impacts the VOP between the two conductors.
The 1205CXB Copper Cable Analyzer TDR provides one of the easiest-to-use instruments in the industry with its ultra-clean, low-noise signal, large color display, and all the TDR controls on-screen at your fingertips.
